About Oriental Trading

There’s no doubt that the warmer months are when we spend the most amount of time inside. Though I may go out to eat or drink, in the winter you’ll generally find me watching TV or reading under a warm blanket. If you’re finding yourself in the same winter rut, here are a few inexpensive winter activities to help you get excited about the season…

Play On – Put that Wii, Xbox, or Playstation to good use. Instead of spending a couple hundred to a couple thousand paying to ski, ski on your Wii. If you’d rather burn a few extra calories, host a Just Dance competition. Watching your friends try to keep up will be reward enough! Rock Band or Guitar Hero are also sure to be party pleasers.

Visit the Zoo – Winter is a great time to visit the zoo. Most city zoos are open year round and offer special winter events and attractions. Best of all: you’ll avoid the large crowds and sweltering humidity.

Ice Skating – I don’t play many sports, but I do love to ice skate. This can be a fun way to spend the day with kids or friends. You’ll easily kill a few hours and burn a lot of calories on the rink. Most skating rinks host public skating on the weekends and only charge a few dollars per person for entry. Some offer free entry for kids. Bring your own skates to save more money.

Costume Party – I’m sure you have a few dozen Halloween costumes buried in your closet. Having a costume party in the winter can be a fun event for everyone to help break up mundane routines. If you don’t have a good outfit, you can also find costumes on sale for extremely low prices at this time of year.

Visit a Museum – Most cities and major towns have at least one free museum or days where entrance fees are reduced. Go visit that art show you’ve always been meaning to see or check out neat exhibits at a science center.

Join a Class – I’m terrible at sticking to a workout schedule in the winter. Once it gets the least bit chilly, I’m notorious for convincing myself to skip sessions. I’ve found that by joining a class (find one cheaply at local colleges and YMCA’s) I feel guiltier about skipping. It’s also a great way to stay social and active.

Indoor Water Parks – Keeping kids active and amused can be difficult during winter months. Indoor playgrounds and water parks are one option for a fun-filled day. Treat them to a day of waterslides, swimming, and games at an indoor park. Tickets are fairly inexpensive, around $12 per child.
